I am studying English Language Teaching at Abant Izzet Baysal University and I can’t get used to be here since I’ve come here. And now it is last term of my school life. There are just a few months to my graduation. I can’t understand how time passes… It is not just the time that changes, people and their feelings as well. Even if how much I wanna graduate and go to Istanbul permanently, I can say that I will never forget my precious teachers and the things they taught me.
TERM IS OVER
9 JunI very enjoyed in literature lesson in this term. We all got to know Mr. Akayaoglu since the beginnig of the term but it feels like several years. I’m sure my friends think and feel like me. Thank you teacher for your sensibility and tolerance, for everything ! Knowing to see you next term is enough for our happiness. We all want to see you in our lessons 🙂
THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER
1 JunMysterious, interesting story The Rime of the Ancient Mariner written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The story dominated by the supernatural forces, nature, strong human emotions, sin and restorations. We can see them all clearly !
The story is about an old mariner who tell the story to wedding guests. Because of warning others. Their ship is driven south by a storm. Ice was all around and albatross appears. The albatross leads them out of the fog. The mariner shoots the albatross. Later, the wind stops and the ship is stranded for days.. They couldn’t find water ” water, water, every where, nor any drop to drink.” Then, the crew blames the mariner and hang the albatross around his neck as punishment. Ship approaches with a specter-woman and her death-mate. Everyone dies in the ship except for mariner because of the curse. Then he saw the water snakes and realized the beautiness of nature and all creation. Then, the curse is lifted and albatross falls from his neck and sinks ”like lead into the sea”. Also the mariner returns to his home port and the spirits of his crew leave their bodies. Then mariner’s ship sinks as well.
I love this story so much because it reflecst the real world as well. It took my attention because it is so interesting and eccentric.
THE ROMANTIC MOVEMENT
1 JunThis period is dominated by the nature and emotions. Also, there were some reactions against the rationalism.
Five poets are important in this period. They are William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats. Two of them, Wordsworth and Coleridge were published a book of poems called ”Lyrical Ballads”. The Rime of The Ancient Mariner by Coleridge. Don Juan by Byron.
This period’s language is generally simple, pure. Also, Romanticism characterized by the % ”I”s. There are imagination, intuition, idealism, inspiration and individuality.
As a conclusion, all of them are valuable writer&poet and they left us important works. They are still read.
DEAD POETS SOCIETY
30 MayI really impressed with this film. Film dominated by the ”Carpe Diem”. Film noted that teachers are acting important role in our life. This is really true because students are spend their time with their teachers than their parents.
In that film, teacher John Keating love his job so much and so he care about his students in that way. Because of this, his students respect him very much. His course processing style different from other teacher. So, students never bored Mr. John’s lesson.
Dead Poets Society is good for us because we are future’s teachers. I hope we will be a teacher like Mr. Keating. He is an example we will have to take. Carpe diem or in other way seize the day and teach what you know in an appropriate way for all your students.
ROBINSON CRUSOE
3 MayRobinson Crusoe is the most important novel of Daniel Defoe and is considered to be the first modern novel by many people. Defoe is considered to be the father of the English novel as well.
We watched Robinson Crusoe in our class and I must say it clearly that I didn’t know it includes love. I impressed by the story because the topic of this story comes from the real-life adventure. So, the book includes great realism and it keeps attention alive. The other thing I like that he named his friend as Friday because he saved his life on “friday”.
As I mention above, I found this story interesting. It contains love, friendship, compassion, strugle for survival, patience and more. How someone isn’t influenced by this story ?
THE 18th CENTURY
5 AprWith Glorious Revolution in England; peace & prosperity, civil calm, economic well-being had seen.
Scotland and England were united and became “Great Britain”.
There are some revolutions in this period, for instance; increasing volume of trade, improving agriculture & industry, new steam engine and rapid road travel.
Life good for rich people, but unfortunetely for poor people didn’t. They really lived under bad conditions. Most of the children couldn’t become an adult. They became ill easily because streets were used as lavatories.
This period has many changes & developments but it has also bad things unfortunetely.
PARADISE LOST.
2 AprLast week, we mentioned about Paradise Lost by John Milton. It was about Adam and Eve,their eating forbidden fruit and as a consequence they got expelled from the Heaven and sent to the Earth.
I love this story because, its a kind of story that we are all familiar with.Even if we do not know it detailed,we can actually know what is mentioned in it and we can also know its main idea.In addition, I think, the writer, John Milton may have used fiction in some part of the book.As we all know ,it is a real event, but when he transformed it into a story, he may did some changes and additions.
Briefly I enjoyed and loved this topic. But we read only the summary so i cannot comment much.
CİVIL WAR AND RESTORATION.
26 MarLast week our lesson was about Civil War and Restoration. There was so many changes in this period, like social life, literature, economy etc.Last lesson we read two poems. One is ”To His Cay Mistress” by Andrew Marwell, and the other one is ”On Hiss Blindness” by John Milton, to his Jay Mistress’s theme is ”Jarpe Diem”. The poem mentions about love and the other poem, On His Blindness, describes his blindness. Briefly, we mentioned love and blindness and actually ı dont like this kind of love.
Last week at literature lesson,we talked about The Flea and Holly Soneet X. A marriage and love are together in flea via blood. Holly Sonnet X is about death. According to me,Flea has an extraordinary topic.Because it is so interesting to describe love by comparing it with the flea’s blood. No matter what,at the end the topic was effective and at the same time it was different.
